1.0 PHILOSOPHY:
"Piggy," in our opinion, is another name for "leech." In this case, it
refers to "file leeches," those inconsiderate, callous, and self-centered
BBS users who take and take (download files) but give nothing (upload
files) in return. This program is dedicated to those people, or more
accurately, to the sysops who spend many hours as librarians, dealing with
the selfishness of the "piggies." We chose the name "PIGGY" because:
a) Other programs have already been named LEECH;
b) The term "piggy" might be a little more polite than "leech"
(not that the file leeches deserve it);
c) "PIGGY" was all we could think of, and besides, it has a cute
ring to it, which we hope will inspire you to send the
author the registration fee.
1.1 PURPOSE:
PIGGY (tm) is designed to help GT1500+ sysops monitor and control users'
upload/download ratios, generate exception reports, and (with the
registered version) automatically raise and lower users' access levels
according to sysop-defined parameters. The sysop may create a customized
configuration which best meets the needs of his/her system. When run, the
program examines the USER.CTL file (GT1500 and newer) for users' upload and
download statistics, and generates exception reports based on parameters
defined in the configuration file. The registered version also has the
capability to dynamically and automatically change users' access levels
based on criteria defined by the sysop.
DO NOT ATTEMPT to run PIGGY (tm) without first reading this documentation
in its entirety!

3.0 FILES INCLUDED:
The following files should be in the package:
FILENAME DESCRIPTION
--------------------------------------------------------------
PIGGY251.EXE The ratio program; does the actual work.
PIGIN251.EXE Configuration program; reads & modifies your
installation parameters.
PIGGY251.DOC What you're reading now.
3.1 FILES CREATED:
The following files will be created:
FILENAME DESCRIPTION
--------------------------------------------------------------
PIGGY.CFG The configuration file
PIGGY.RPT List of users who should be downgraded
PIGGY.BBS ASCII bulletin file listing existing piggies
PIGGY.CBS ANSI bulletin file listing existing piggies
PIGNOMOR.RPT List of users who should be upgraded
These files will be explained in more detail later.
6
4.0 INSTALLATION:
The PIGGY (tm) programs MUST be installed in the GT directory that contains
the USER.CTL file. Simply copy PIGGY251.EXE and PIGIN251.EXE to this
directory. This release of PIGGY (tm) requires that ANSI.SYS be installed
on your system.
NOTE! Before you run the PIGGY (tm) program, it is strongly
recommended that you make a backup copy of your USER.CTL file
"just in case." This is particularly important if you are using
the registered version of PIGGY (tm), which has the capability to
dynamically and automatically change users' access levels. We are
not aware of any cases of this program causing any damage, but
having a backup of the USER.CTL file is good insurance! (Starting
with Version 2.50 of PIGGY (tm), when the program is run, it will
make a copy of your USER.CTL file, and name the copy USER.OLX.
Then run PIGIN251.EXE. You will be given 9 options from which to choose in
order to customize PIGGY (tm) to meet the requirements of your system. As
you select each option, a short help paragraph will appear at the bottom of
the screen.
NOTE: If you have been using a version of PIGGY (tm) prior to
version 2.50, BE SURE TO DELETE THE OLD PIGGY.CFG file!
PIGIN251.EXE will create a new configuration file for you.
4.1 INSTALLATION OPTIONS:
The options are as follows:
1. FILE OR KILOBYTE RATIO: This toggles between using a number
of files versus a number of bytes to compute ratios. In other
words, you can establish ratios based on the number of files
uploaded and downloaded, or you can establish ratios based on
the number of kilobytes uploaded and downloaded. Repeatedly
hitting the "1" key will toggle the right field between "FILE"
and "BYTE."
2. # OF FILES/KILOBYTES FREE: This is the baseline of "free"
uploads. The PIGGY (tm) program starts computing ratios only for
users who have exceeded this baseline number. For example,
assume you wish to give new users a chance to get a few
essential files with no penalty. You can use this option to
let the caller download, say, 20 files or 250K, before the
caller is required to maintain the specified ratio. If you wish
all callers to immediately maintain a ratio requirement, set this
value to zero.
7
3. RATIO {UPLOAD:DOWNLOAD}: This is the number of kilobytes (or
number of files) the user is allowed to download before one
kilobyte (or one file) must be uploaded. It is the actual ratio
you want to set. REMEMBER TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHICH
OPTION YOU CHOSE IN OPTION #1 (files vs. kilobytes)!!! Note that
the only value you enter is the DOWNLOAD variable (kilobytes
or number of files); e.g.
1:x
where x is the download variable
4. AUTO-DOWNGRADE MODE (REGISTERED VERSION ONLY): With the
registered version this will toggle the automatic downgrade
feature of PIGGY (tm). With this option enabled, PIGGY (tm) will
automatically downgrade users who have exceeded the ratio
specified in PIGIN251.EXE (see OPTION #6). This means their
access level will be DECREASED to the level defined in OPTION #6.
5. AUTO-UPGRADE MODE (REGISTERED VERSION ONLY): With the
registered version this will toggle the automatic upgrade feature
of PIGGY (tm). With this option enabled, PIGGY (tm) will
automatically reinstate a downgraded user to a predetermined
level (set by OPTION #7) when the user's ratio has reached the
cutoff guidelines you have set with PIGIN251.EXE. Sysops may want
to leave this feature disabled so that the sysop may first
examine what has been uploaded. (Some unscrupulous users are
notorious for uploading duplicate files, renamed files, old and
obsolete files, and other assorted junk, so as to improve their
ratios.) Even if you leave this option disabled, when a user's
ratio has come in line with your guidelines, his named will be
added to a report named PIGNOMOR.RPT, alerting you to the
possibility that the user should have his access level elevated.
6. DOWNGRADE TO LEVEL (REGISTERED VERSION ONLY): With the
registered version, if OPTION #4 (automatic downgrade feature) is
enabled, this option will define the user's downgraded access
level when the user has exceeded the ratios defined by
PIGIN251.EXE (see OPTION #4). In other words this is the file
pig's access level. Remember that GT and PIGGY (tm) are
CASE-SENSITIVE! This access level must be defined in
GTPASSWD.BBS. It is suggested that this access level restrict
users from downloading, cut back their time limits, or otherwise
penalize them for discourteous behavior, and hopefully give them
an incentive to change their ways.
8
7. REINSTATE TO LEVEL (REGISTERED VERSION ONLY): With the
registered version, if OPTION #5 is enabled (automatic upgrade
feature), this option will define the user's upgraded access
level when the user has exceeded the ratios defined by
PIGIN251.EXE (see OPTION #5). In other words, when the user has
uploaded a satisfactory number of files (or kilobytes) so that
his ratio has come in line with the guidelines established by the
sysop, the program will upgrade the user to a predefined access
level. Remember that GT and PIGGY (tm) are CASE-SENSITIVE! This
access level must be defined in GTPASSWD.BBS, and can, if
desired, grant limited "probationary" privileges. Sysops may want
to leave this feature disabled so that the sysop may first
examine what has been uploaded (See OPTION #5).
8. CREATE PIGGY (tm) BULLETIN: This option will enable the
creation of PIGGY (tm) bulletins. If enabled, you will be asked
WHICH ACCESS LEVEL DEFINES FILE PIGGIES. Remember that numeric
access levels are higher than alpha access levels. Users who have
this access level are listed in the PIGGY (tm) bulletin. The two
bulletins are PIGGY.BBS (ASCII) and PIGGY.CBS (ANSI color). The
access level normally will be the same as in option 6 but if for
some reason you wish to include in the list users from other
access levels, you may do so. The PIGGY.?BS files are written
into the GT directory. It is up to you to rename them, move them,
or otherwise use them as you see fit.
9. ACCESS LEVEL TO SKIP: This option defines which minimum access
level (and above) are excluded from the PIGGY (tm) ratios. For
example, the sysop, co-sysops, and other qualified users may be
exempted from maintaining ratios altogether. Remember that if you
define, say, LEVEL C as exempt, all "higher" access levels will
also be exempt (e.g. B, A, 9, 8,...1, 0).
R. REGISTERED TO (REGISTERED VERSION ONLY): Name of person,
company, or BBS, in which the program has been registered. Enter
this data in UPPERCASE only, 15 characters maximum. This option
also prompts you for a CRC number, which will be assigned to you
when you register the program. Inclusion of this data "wakes up"
the enhanced features of the program.
A. ABORT WITHOUT CHANGE: This option allows you to quit the
program without creating or changing the PIGGY.CFG file.
E. EXIT AND WRITE CONFIGURATION TO FILE: This option allows you
to exit the program and saves the current configuration.
9
4.2 QUICK MODE (new in Version 2.50):
A QUICK mode has been added in PIGGY251 (tm). This is only available to
registered users. It is enabled by adding /Q to the PIGGY command line. The
quick mode can be used in your GTLOGOFF.BAT. This will check the ratio of
the currently logged on user only. The purpose of this is to prevent "real
pigs" from logging on several times in one day and avoiding the the PIGGY
program in the nightly maintance batch. The QUICK mode can upgrade and
downgrade a user the same as the regular maintance run, however, no reports
are generated in quick mode. Quick mode run much faster since it only
checks the one user's ratio and does not generate reports.
NOTE: If you use the QUICK mode in the GTLOGOFF.BAT, be sure to add
commands to the batch file to change to the \GT directory, so that
PIGGY251.EXE can find the files it needs (when run from GTLOGOFF.BAT, the
default directory is usually NOT the \GT directory):
ECHO OFF
D:
CD \GT
PIGGY251 /Q
5.0 FILES AND REPORTS (See sample reports at end of documentation):
The following files, reports, and bulletins are created when PIGGY (tm) is
executed:
PIGGY.CFG: This is the configuration file, and is created when
you run PIGIN251.EXE. It tells PIGGY (tm) the type of ratio you
want, which access levels are effected by the ratio requirements,
and if you want bulletins generated. With the registered version,
it also tells PIGGY (tm) which automatic access level change
functions are to be implemented.
PIGGY.RPT: This report is generated each time PIGGY (tm) is run.
With the unregistered version, it will contain a list of users
whose access level SHOULD BE MANUALLY DOWNGRADED. With the
registered version it also contains a list of users who were
AUTOMATICALLY DOWNGRADED DURING THE LAST RUN OF PIGGY (tm). Note
that with the registered version, if OPTION #4 (auto-downgrade
mode) is disabled, this feature operates the same as the
unregistered version. With both versions it also lists users who
were skipped because their access level is equal to or higher
than the exemption level defined in the PIGIN251.EXE program.
PIGGY.BBS: If the bulletin option is enabled, this file will list
all the users who ARE PIGGIES, that is, USERS WHO POSSESS THE
PIGGY ACCESS LEVEL DEFINED BY THE SYSOP. These users have either
been manually downgraded (unregistered version), or have been
auto-downgraded (registered version).
10
The PIGGY.BBS file is an ASCII listing. The file may be renamed
by the sysop or by a maintenance batch file and posted in the
BULLETIN subdirectory of the BBS. The intent of posting this
bulletin is to "encourage" heavy downloaders to upload (the
Guilty Conscience Theory).
PIGGY.CBS: This is an ANSI color version of PIGGY.BBS.
PIGNOMOR.RPT: Provides a listing of PIGGIES whose ratios have come in
line with the guidelines you set up, ie, users who may be upgraded out
of the PIGGY access level. In registered versions with AUTO-UPGRADE
enabled, the report will list users who HAVE BEEN auto-upgraded.

total price to you will be $10.00. This offer applies to single-copy
registrations only.
14
9.3 BUG ALERT & IMPROVEMENTS ALERT:
This is a small bug release. For all the sysops that were
using the byte ratio, the bulletin would only show up to 4
decimal places the uploads and downloads in the bulletins.
Althought the ratios where be computed correctly it appeared
that the ratios were wrong. For example if the user had
downloaded 32123 kilobytes the bulletin would show downloaded
kilobytes as 3212. I have expanded this to 5 places.
We have extensively tested this version
of PIGGY (tm) and have found it to be reliable and bug free. However, we
would appreciate it if you would report any bugs or unusual operation of
the program. Recommendations for enhancements will also be welcomed.

11.0 LAST MINUTE NOTES:
Hey Mark, what took so long in getting PIGGY250 out?
Well, I've been asked why it took so long to get PIGGY250 out. Well, the
truth of the matter is, after release of PIGGY200 there was an awful lot of
negative feedback. Although there was no attack against the program itself
(as there was no problem with the program) there were some Sysops who said
the program was not necessary. As with all shareware programs, you don't
have to use it. The negative feedback had an effect on my desire to upgrade
the program. However, enough people registered the PIGGY program to show me
that there was a need and a desire for an upgrade. Anybody who would like
to see further enhancements may send his/her comments to NET 080/002 or may
call THE ZONE BBS at 913-299-4469.
12.0 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
I would like to thank Dan Turkisher for some of the ideas for PIGGY (tm)
and for helping me write the documentation.
Thanks to Paul Meiners for GT, and to all the other GT sysops and users who
have assisted me in the past.
